Partnership Bios

CoralRealm is the creation of an eclectic partnership among a group of marine biology, web technology, content development and design experts. We have a passion for coral reef ecosystems as well as a love of diving, travel and cultural diversity. We're "We Love Big Smelly Fish!"™

Scott W. Michael
Minister of Marine Intelligence

smichael@coralrealm.com

Scott was hatched in a drainage ditch near the mighty metropolis of Fremont, Nebraska (home of the FHS Fighting Tigers). He spent his youth swimming with bullheads, carp and fathead minnows. Later in life, he "migrated" to warmer, more saline environments where he spent countless hours observing and photographing sharks, rays and reef fishes.

Scott's passion for "all cartilaginous," incited him to write his first book, Reef Sharks and Rays of the World. He subsequently moved further down the food chain and began researching reef fish ecology (specifically the feeding behavior of frogfishes). He recently published Reef Fishes, the first of volume of a three-volume series on reef fishes.

Scott has been a scientific consultant for a National Geographic Explorer special on sharks and a participant in a Discovery Channel special on his cartilaginous companions. He was also a special guest on Romper Room, a local show for inquisitive toddlers.

Scott is the husband of Janine "the Kiwi" Cairns-Michael, and the surrogate father of Ruby the golden retriever and Ted the tasseled wobbegong. Scott shares Janine’s passion for collecting, but limits his efforts to the acquisition of refrigerator magnets and human hair.

Scott writes most of the scientific content for CoralRealm, like the species profiles. Scott also contributes featured articles and travel logs, as well as providing most of the underwater photographs present on the site.

Terry Majewski
Potentate of Everything Digital

majewski@coralrealm.com

Terry was born in a manger in a small airplane hanger on the outskirts of Cozad, Nebraska. He is believed to be the reincarnated Orville Wright. While his friends would classify him as a "down-to-earth" kind of guy, Terry prefers to spend his free time with his head underwater or in the clouds...literally.

A diver since the 80's, Terry has spent hundreds of hours exploring the coral reef system and exhibits strong (if not extreme) Explorer Diver behaviors (see the CoralRealm Diver Personality Profiler). Several years ago he and his wife acquired an UW video system and they now spend several minutes on every dive fighting over who gets the camera.

A pilot since the early 70's, Terry likes to create new cloud formations in his homebuilt, WWI, open-cockpit, biplane. He also likes barnstorming fisherman and farmers.

Terry is the CoralRealm technical guru. He is responsible for the design, development and programming of the CoralRealm databases and dynamically created web pages. Terry has been involved in the Internet and the "web" since its graphical emergence in the early 90's. Since that time Terry has designed and developed web sites and Internet/Intranet applications for a number or organizations and companies. His specialty is integrating databases and E-Commerce solutions into web sites.

Being a partner in CoralRealm lets Terry combine his love of travel, diving and marine life with his skills and talents in website design and development.

Janine Cairns-Michael
Queen of Keen

janine@coralrealm.com
Janine is a native of the land of mountains, sheep and rugby – the South Island of New Zealand. Although her initial interest in fish was limited to those that were served with fried potatoes and wrapped in newspaper, she has since become a keen underwater naturalist.

Janine has been diving since the late 80’s, and prides herself on her amazing buoyancy control, her frogfish-finding skills and her ability to mimic a range of sand-dwelling sipunculid worms.

A jeweler, an artist, an avid gardener and an underwater photographer, Janine specializes in invertebrates and slow-moving fishes. Her "weapon" of choice (and favorite birthday present ever) is the Nexus F4, with the accompanying Nikon camera and a 60 mm macro lens. Her preferred "hunting grounds" are the coastal reefs of Lembeh Strait in Northern Sulawesi.

In her free time, Janine collects dried sheep dung (cheerful reminders of her homeland), as well as wire coat hangers from around the world. She assists in designing, editing and developing content for CoralRealm. She also contributes photos to the site.

Terri Parson
Wielder of Woo

tparson@coralrealm.com

Terri was born on another planet and is now working as a free agent on Earth. Her early alien years were spent living and learning on a farm near Valley, Nebraska. It was there that she developed a keen awareness and appreciation for the gifts of nature. The farm was the cradle of her creativity: a mountain of corn became a ski slope in the Rockies; the pasture slough became a biology lab; a large tree stump became a stovetop for freshly baked mud pies.

After graduating from the University of Nebraska with a degree in Journalism - Advertising, Terri began a 17-year career orbiting a giant corporate hairball. In the 80's she was introduced to diving on a trip to Cozumel. She was hooked. Traveling and underwater exploration soon became her escape from the rules and conformity of the business world.

A telecommunications merger sent Terri spinning into space and beyond the forces of corporate gravity -- an event she now describes as "a true blessing in disguise." During the past four years, she's developed a consulting business specializing in workforce development. A self-proclaimed champion for hopeless, corporate cosmonauts, she conducts training to help employees re-energize their careers and enhance their marketability within the organization.

The "We Love Big Smelly Fish!" partnership provides Terri with an opportunity to combine her passion for nature and everything marine, a business management background, a degree in advertising, and her creative tendencies. She serves as the project manager for the partnership as well as writing content and assisting with website design.
