Wakatobi Revisited - Four Years Later -2004
Text and photos by Terri Parson

Our first trip to Wakatobi was in November, 2000 -- only four years after the resort opened for business. When we stepped onto the sandy beach of Onemonaa Island (where the resort is planted), we thought we were at the edge of the world. And justifiably so. It had taken us nearly three days to get to the resort via a complement of air, car, and boat travel. (And this was in addition to nearly 30 hours it had taken us to get to Bali.) We felt like hearty pioneers exploring a new dive frontier. And it WAS a new frontier. Few divers had ever explored the reefs in this very remote part of the world.

In November 2004, we visited Wakatobi Dive Resort once again. We were told by the Wakatobi team that we would experience a new and improved resort/dive operation. Certainly, the two-and-a-half-hour, private charter flight from Denpasar, Bali makes a visit to this part of the world more practical. But we wondered if the enhancements and additions the Wakatobi team made to the resort's infrastructure and guest services would rally live up to their marketing promises.

In this feature article, you'll learn how the resort and their dive operation compare to our last visit. To read about our visit in 2000, members can click here.
