UPDATE: In 2001 Wakatobi completed their own private airstrip with a 1 mile long paved runway. Today you travel to the resort via a direct Wakatobi Aircharter that takes less than 3 hours. The long journey described below in the section "The journey: a matter of perspective" is just a fond memory and remains part of this article for historical and entertainment value. You now have breakfast in Bali and by early afternoon you're floating over the beautiful Wakatobi house reef.

Open only five years, this resort is so remote that all but a small percentage of the inhabitants of this area live without electricity, running water or telecommunications.
