One of the most spectacular of all the members of the family Apogonidae, and a relatively recent discovery, is the Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni). The Banggai cardinalfish is only known from the island for which it is named (there have been some unverified claims that it occurs over a wider range). Banggai Island is off the eastern coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Its unusual color pattern and even more unique reproductive behavior has made this species very popular with ichthyologists and aquarists alike.

In this CoralRealm article we will take a close look at this spectacular cardinalfish. This includes a rare photo of a school of these fishes in the wild, as well as detailed information about their reproductive biology.

PLUS We have late breaking new of the discovery of this cardinalfish in a new location. Real About it!
