THOSE DAZZLING DOTTYBACKS
(Family Pseudochromidae)
by Scott W. Michael
The coral reef is home to a myriad of small, brightly colored fishes. Unfortunately, many are these are overlooked by
those divers that only get excited about big and bold reef fishes. Dottybacks are a group of sea bass-like
fishes that are regularly overlooked by divers. As far as their chromatic attire is concerned,
some members of this group rival the most popular "reef beauties," like the angels and butterflyfishes.
But unlike many of these reef fishes, most dottybacks are diminutive fishes that will quickly retreat
into reef crevices when approached. Therefore, divers usually catch only fleeting glimpses of these fishes and
do not take the time to "wait them out."
