Possum Wrasses (genus Wetmorella)
by Scott W. Michael
 |
| These secretive wrasses are
often overlooked by divers, except for those underwater explorers that spend time
investigating the back of caves and deep crevices. This is the rarest member of the genus,
Wetmorella triocellata, the pygmy possum wrasse. Photo by Scott W. Michael.

More experienced divers and underwater photographers are always looking for
something new. If you are diving in the Indo-Pacific why not try locating
a possum wrasse? These dainty, but secretive, members of the genus Wetmorella
are usually seen in deep caves, under overhangs, or in the back of caves. In this
Coral Realm feature article, we will look
how and where to find these Lilliputians of the labrid family.
We will also review what is known about their biology.
