Most frogfish species come in a variety of different "flavors." This can make recognition very frustrating for the neophyte and advanced fish watcher alike. In fact, the color variability of these fishes once caused chaos in the ichthyological community. Most of the valid frogfish species were given three or four scientific names based on different color forms.
