Goats of the Reef:
Feeding Behavior of the family Mullidae
Text and photos by Scott W. Michael
More and more divers are moving off the coral reef and exploring the surrounding sand and
mud flats and slopes. This type of diving has even been given its own designation - muck
diving. Those individuals that survey these soft substrate habitats have been treated to
encounters with a number of unusual fish species, including different snake eels, garden
eels, snappers, emperors, spine cheeks, gobies, flatfishes, and puffers. But one of the
most important components of the soft substrate fish fauna are the goatfishes (family
Mullidae).
In this article, we will examine the feeding behavior of these fascinating fishes.
