Every neighborhood has its bullies. These are the neighbors or transients that the other residents go out of their way to avoid. In many cases, these bad boys incite fear and retreat whenever they cruise the area. On coral reefs, the fishes that fill this role are the jacks. These active predators are often referred to as "mobile transients." They usually do not limit their movements to a restricted area or a specific part of the reef but roam freely over great tracts of reef. They may limit their movements to a specific area if they find that food is abundant there, but otherwise they are not tied to the reef like many of its smaller piscine residents.

In this article we will look at the varied hunting behavior of the jacks.
