Reef Fishes that Lure

Reef fishes employ a number of different strategies to capture their prey. Some of the most
interesting are the sit-and-wait (ambush) predators that have taken their hunting strategy to the
next level. Rather than wait for motile prey organisms to amble by, they attempt to attract them
into striking range. This hunting strategy is known as luring.
The frogfishes are known as the Isaac Waltons of the luring fishes. They use a modified first dorsal
spine to fish for small fishes and crustaceans. We have provided much information on

reef fishes. These species are the subject of this
