The Biology of the Morwongs (Family Cheilodactylidae)
 |
| The morwongs are most
often encountered on rocky reefs in subtropical and warm temperate seas. This is the spottedtail
morwong (Goniistius zonatus) from Japan. Photo by Scott W. Michael.
|
The morwongs are unusual fishes thought to be closely related to the
hawkfishes. They are also known as Moki in New Zealand and fingerfins in South Africa.
Although these fishes are rarely seen in the aquarium trade, they are occasionally
encountered by divers that spend time in the western Pacific, especially in warm
temperate seas.
