Some Secret Bay Stingers -
Weird and Wonderful Scorpion and Waspfishes

Longspined Lionfish
Secret Bay is home to many weird and wild venomous fishes, like this apparently undescribed lionfish. Read this article and learn more! Photo by Janine Cairns-Michael

There are a number of reef fishes that are equipped with venomous spines. These are primarily used for defense, although in some species they may also be employed to harm their rivals. The scorpionfishes and waspfishes are two well-known groups of reef-dwelling stingers. The potency of the venom varies from no more deadly than a bee sting to very virulent and even lethal. In most species, envenomation results in painful puncture wounds, with relief usually coming within hours of the sting.

On a recent trip to Secret Bay, we encountered some interesting and bizarre members of the scorpion and waspfish families. In this CoralRealm Feature Article we will share some of our observations, as well as photos, of these fishes.
