The Tilefish Mound: A Micro-Ecosystem
|
| The sand tilefish mound.
|
The mounds created by sand tilefish occur in areas near coral reefs where places to hide
are often few and far between. By collecting and piling bits of debris in this habitat,
the tilefish, in effect, creates and artificial reef that can be utilized as a sanctuary
and a source of food by invertebrates and other fish species.
In this CoralRealm article, we will look at the piscine residents of the
"reefs" created by the sand tilefish.
