Polychaete Worms (Class Polychaeta)

Fireworm
The bearded fireworm can cause a painful wound if they are contacted by bare skin.
Although there are a number of worms found in coral reef environments, the species most often encountered by divers belong to the class polychaeta. There are about 5,300 species of polychaete worms, which belong to the phylum Annelida. Most of these reside in marine habitats. The vast majority of these worms are secretive, hiding in reef crevices, under rubble, or in sand or mud. The species most often encountered by divers are the Christmas tree worms, the fan worms and the fire worms.
