Soft corals (Subclass Octocorallia)

This group includes some of the most spectacular sessile invertebrates on the coral reef. For example, the colors and form of some of the Indo-Pacific soft coral genera, like the Dendronephthya and Scleronephthya spp. cannot be rivaled. Likewise, large stands of pastel colored sea fans create dramatic seascapes on coral reefs in the tropical Atlantic. These animals are found on coral reefs around the world and usually are the first corals to colonize hurricane damaged reefs and deep reefs. They also tend to be more common on reefs that are subjected to pollutants than their stony relatives. This is an extremely varied group, which includes the lesser known blue corals, sea pens, stoloniferans (e.g., pipe organ coral) and the sea whips, as well as the gorgonians and more common soft corals varieties.
