A Hammerhead Smorgasbord:
Hammerhead Diaries

The schooling behavior of hammerheads was the subject of intense study by Dr. A. P. Klimley. Find out more about his research and what it's like doing field work on sharks in this article.

"In the summer of 1981 I had the opportunity to study the schooling behavior of scalloped hammerheads with Dr. A. Peter Klimley. The research was conducted in the southern Sea of Cortez, which was at that time, the richest area I've ever seen! Giant mantas, twirling clouds of tuna, breeching billfish, amberjack, huge schools of scalloped hammerheads, whale sharks, and numerous other elasmobranchs were common inhabitants of this "underwater Eden." We snorkeled with the hammerheads on most days for over six weeks, recording their behaviors on video and with pencil and slate. We used a stereo camera to measure the lengths of the sharks in the field. We also used telemetry tags to study their movements around the seamounts."

In this portion of the Coral Realm Hammerhead Smorgasbord a Coral Realm partner will share some of his research journal notes. Hopefully, the reader will be able to vicariously experience the richness of the "Desert Sea" and get a better idea what shark research entails. So what are you waiting for?
