Sting Cuisine
While many sharks feed on whatever prey is available, some do show
marked hunting preferences. Such is the case for some of the members of the hammerhead
shark family. For example, one of the hammerheads has a culinary soft-spot for
"sting-cuisine" (i.e., stingrays). Other hammerheads are somewhat less selective about
their bill of fare, although they do show some predatory proclivities.
In this portion of the CoralRealm
Hammerhead Smorgasbord we will take a look at a sphyrnid that is particularly
fond of stingrays. This includes a description of an actual predation event involving this
shark. We will also examine the diets of several other larger hammerheads
and dispel some myths about their predilection for their spine-bearing cousins. We will
also highlight the hammerhead's predatory prowess. (This article
