A Hammerhead Smorgasbord:
Hammerhead Schooling

More is known about the life history of the scalloped hammerhead than any of the other members of the family. In the late 70's large schools of these sharks were discovered in the southern Sea of Cortez. Since that time, intrepid researchers have spend thousands of hours observing them and studying their schooling behavior. One of the questions that was originally asked by these scientists was "Why do these sharks school."

In this portion of the Coral Realm Hammerhead Smorgasbord we will see what answers that scientists have come-up with. We will also conduct a detailed exploration of the age-associated changes in the habitat preferences and social behavior of this common, large predator. This section includes four video clips showing scalloped hammerhead schools, as well as individuals with massive contusions resulting from social interactions. Oh, and a survey of the other schooling hammerheads is also provided. If you're going to observe schooling hammerheads yourself, you will not want to miss this very informative article! So, what are you waiting for?
