A Hammerhead Smorgasbord:
What's Up With The Hammer

The hammerheads are conspicuous members of the shark clan because of the lateral extensions of the head. This structure is known to scientists as the cephalofoil. Laypeople refer to it as the "hamer." Except for this strange structure, these sharks are similar in form to the requiem sharks (family Carcharhinidae).

There has been much speculation concerning the function of the unusual head morphology. In this portion of the Coral Realm Hammerhead Smorgasbord we will look at the current theories concerning the function of the hammer. Proposed functions include increased manueverability, enhanced sensory modalities, and a structure used in food capture. The article also includes two underwater photos showing this unique structure in two very different species. So what are you waiting for?
