The Irian Epaulette Shark -
A New Species in the Genus Hemiscyllium

In 1983, Dingerkus and DeFino published a revision of the family Hemiscylliidae. They recognized 12 valid members of the family including two new species. They also described a juvenile member of the genus Hemiscyllium that they thought may represent a new species. They didn't have juveniles specimens of two of the known Hemiscyllium spp. and though unlikely, they thought it was possible that this unknown juvenile may represent one of these two epaulette species, even though the color pattern was quite different.

In this Research Report we'll look at a new species of shark in this genus that has been observed off Irian Jaya. I will give description of the known epaulettes along with a diagnosis of this new species. The article includes photos of all the Hemiscyllium spp.
