RAY-PRODUCTION:
Field observations on the mating behavior
of the round stingray (Urolophus halleri)
 |
A female round stingray with conspicuous bite
marks on her disc. |
Courtship and copulation has been documented in relatively few elasmobranch species.
This is due in part to the fact that these are large, free-ranging animals that
live in a relatively concealing environment.
In this Coral Realm feature article
the reproductive behavior and mating system of the round stingray (Urolophus halleri)
is described in great detail. Included are photos of the various courtship behaviors and
copulation. There is more info here on the reproductive behavior of an elasmobranch than
anywhere else on the web!
