Solomon Islands
Diving Guadalcanal, The Floridas, Morovo Lagoon and the Russells Islands
by Terry Majewski
Between November 18 and November 28 1998 my wife and I made 45 dives in the Solomon
Islands. Our diving took place around Guadalcanal, the Florida Islands, Morovo Lagoon
in the Georgia Group and the Russell Islands. During this 10 day trip we travel aboard the
Spirit of Solomons live-a-board. We dove on a variety of dive sites including WWII
wrecks, remote atolls, submerged pinnacles and remote island reefs. Diving conditions were
generally good with visibility and currents changing with the locations. Pilot whales,
sperm whales, dolphins, as well a a variety of other strange and exotic marine creatures
were encountered on a regular basic.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of visiting and diving in the Solomons Islands was the
opportunity to see the remote villages and people that live there. Many of these villages
are untouched by western influence. The scenes of children and adults paddling their dugout
canoes out to our dive boats on a regular basis to sell fresh fruits and vegetables will
always be remembered.
Enjoy.
